SAM'S Club has switched to AI machines to scan carts as they try to be the most convenient store for shoppers.

In January, Sam's Club announced that they would be moving away from traditional receipt checks and starting to use AI machines that scan shoppers' carts as they leave the store.

Sam's Club Chief Merchant Megan Crozier said the company aims to be the more convenient place for people to shop[/caption]

The company made the change after customers asked for a faster shopping experience — with the line at the exit door being a point of major contention.

"We aspire to be the most convenient place to shop," Sam's Club Chief Merchant Megan Crozier said during the Walmart Keynote.

During the Keynote, Crozier shared a demonstration video of how the new technology worked.

Shoppers can either pay at a register or use the Scan & Go feature on the Sam's Club app.

Once customers pay, at the exit area of the club, computer vision and digital technology take pictures of carts and verify payment for all items.

The company hopes this new method will reduce long wait times at receipt checks.

"At Sam's Club, we care about every second a member spends with us so eliminating even the few seconds it takes to scan a receipt at the exit door it's well worth it," Crozier said.

The company has already implemented the technology at 10 locations and plans to roll it out to its almost 600 stores in the United States by the end of the year, according to a news release.

"What distinguishes Sam's Club from our competitors is our ability to seamlessly deploy this technology at scale across our nearly 600 clubs nationwide. Whether it's a single item or a cartful, we're revolutionizing the checkout experience," Sam's Club chief product officer Todd Garner said in a statement to Business Insider.

Crozier promised that Sam's Club will "keep finding ways to give our members what they want most, great items, unmatched convenience, and time back for the more important things in life."

MIXED FEELINGS

Sam's Club customers had mixed reviews of the company's changes.

A handful of them were very excited about the improvements.

"As a customer myself, I'd love that," a user said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Scan & Go is already very smooth, this will elevate the customer experience," another person wrote.

"If only @Costco would get it together and catch up to what @SamsClub is doing with their scan and go and receipt check elimination," a third person wrote.

"I'm looking forward to this as a customer," a shopper wrote on a Reddit thread.

"I shop at Costco and Sam's and while my Sam's is a smaller store, getting out is a pain. Being able to officially use Scan & Go and being able to walk right out will be awesome. That's if I don't just get my stuff loaded curbside."

However, some found that it may lead to stealing or changing an already working system.

"Seems like a good way of being accused of theft in the absence of theft," wrote a commenter on the Reddit thread.

"Sounds intriguing, though I have to say Sam's current receipt check process is already pretty good," shared another.
