The tactic? Drop them and see if they bounce.
It'd sound weird, but the science behind the tactic is legit.
A regular alkaline battery – just like the one you slot into the back of an Amazon Hearth TV Stick or Sky remote – bounces quite excessive after being dropped on its end when it's empty.
However when the battery will land flat on its bottom, with little to no bounce, if it's new.
It's because the physical properties of the electrodes change whenever you use a battery.
A video from Chem Thug breaking down the science behind the tactic has gone viral on TikTok, garnering 335,000 views since last yr.
"That is wild," one commenter wrote.

The trick makes changing the batteries behind your TV remote – or another battery-powered gadget you have got – barely simpler.
