Beloved grocery store confirms final day before it closes for good after 28 years – devastating note alerted shoppers | 6326T90 | 2024-05-01 17:08:01
A CALIFORNIA specialty grocery store announced that it's closing Memorial Day Weekend due to post-COVID economic reasons.
Supply chain issues and a change in customer shopping habits are forcing popular grocer Market Hall Foods to close its doors after 28 years.

"Like many other retailers and food establishments, we have been experiencing new challenges post-COVID," co-owner Sara Wilson wrote in a letter to the public.
Market Hall Foods first opened its doors in Berkeley, CA, in 1996.
The shop, once known as The Pasta Shop, sells a large selection of cheeses, locally-sourced ingredients and includes a deli selling fresh sandwiches.
After opening the Berkeley location, Market Hall Foods opened a sister location a couple of miles away in Oakland, CA.
Although the store became a community staple, life post-pandemic proved to be challenging for the once-thriving grocery store.
Wilson cites supply issues and the increase of those working from home as major factors playing into the closure of Market Hall Foods.
"We have seen plenty of supply chain hiccups and disruptions making it difficult to consistently get food and supplies onto our shelves and into our kitchens," Wilson wrote.
"At our 4th Street location, the lunch rush was our busiest time, but with more people working from home, we could no longer rely on those customers."
Working from home became a popular trend following the COVID-19 pandemic.
59% of workers in the United States who work jobs that can be done remotely are now all working from home for part or all of the week, according to a 2022 Pew Research Study.
While the new reality post-pandemic plays a role in the closure of the grocery store, Wilson also mentions that customers overall are being more cost-conscious.
"Customers have become more cautious with their spending and are buying fewer items," Wilson wrote.
Market Hall Foods isn't the only business noticing customers reducing the amount they buy in exchange for cheaper stores.
Many consumers have reported trading down–changing the type or quantity of purchases for better pricing–over the past couple of years, according to a study conducted by McKinsey and Company.

Wilson stresses that the business did all it could to prevent closing.
"We increased our grab-and-go offerings for those looking for a quick bite, honed our grocery, cheese and charcuterie selections to better meet the needs of the Berkeley community, and refined our lunch program to minimize waste," Wilson wrote.
Despite the efforts to reduce waste and improve efficiency, the store couldn't maintain the business it needed to stay open.
Some employees from the store will be transferred over to a different location while others will be given severance packages.
Market Hall Foods will officially close its doors May 26.
